Bearing in mind that many users are inexperienced, it may be necessary to include explanations of things you consider self explanatory. For example, an inexperienced user may need an explanation of how to use a drop down menu. Remember, make it as easy as possible for people to use your website.

DESIGNING FOR USABILITY:

Usability is about making things easy for the user when they have managed to access your website. You will have certain tasks earmarked for your users to carry out on your site – you want your users to be able to carry out these tasks don’t you? Let’s make it easy for them. You can employ principles of user-centred design to ensure a nice experience for your users.

LOGICAL LAYOUT:

Are the most important page elements above the fold? Is site navigation where it’s supposed to be, on the left or top of the site? It just doesn’t pay to get too creative with your site’s layout. After you sit through the unwelcoming splash introduction, you must mouse over the navigation links on the bottom left of the site in order to decipher their meaning.

Access to the Internet may be getting faster, but that doesn’t mean that Web pages should get bigger. In fact, Web usability studies continue to show that the speed a page downloads is very important. After 10 seconds, your customer has lost interest in your page, no matter how interested they were in the topic. You can’t control all aspects of the download – so it’s important to do what you can.

MATCH YOUR CONTENT WITH DESIGN:

The overall look and feel of your design must match the content. If you plan to talk about stock markets, it would be weird to have flowers on the background image right? Identify what your core audience is going to be, and design around their perceptions and preferences. If you are going to write for professionals or older people, perhaps a traditional newspaper look would be a good choice. If your readers will be younger, a more colorful design could be used. And so on.

Web analytics alone can tell you a great deal about your user or customer base, however gaining an understanding of who they are, what motivates them and what their level of satisfaction is will remain a mystery. This is where dedicated usability testing can bring businesses up close and personal with their target audience like never before, helping them understand why their customers have chosen them over their competitors or even more crucially why they have not.
